The son of a grocer, he grew up in Le Havre. Eugène Boudin taught him to paint outdoors.
Painted at Le Havre harbor. Critics mocked it in 1874, and the artists kept the name.
He settled here in 1883, bought the house in 1890, and began the pond in 1893.
He returned to one subject in different light: haystacks, poplars, Rouen Cathedral, his own garden.
